III year - THINK 3, Unit 10, p.94

Hello everyone!

Today we begin with the first grammar content in unit 10. We are going to discuss the future continuous tense, its formation and use, along with some exercises from the web, but also some interesting personal examples. Look at the two sentences in exercise 1, both in connection to the article on the previous page about James Howells. When you complete the two examples, you should get the answers:

1. Twenty years from now, will we still be using notes and coins?
2. In a few decades' time, everyone all over the world will be using a single currency.

In the rule rectangle you have the definition of the use of this tense. We use the future continuous tense to talk about things that will be in progress at a specified time in the future. It indicates that something will occur in the future and continue for an expected length of time.

We form this tense with will + be + verb-ingThe future continuous tense isn't taught very much in English classes but, in fact, English speakers use it a lot. You will sound much more natural if you master this tense.

  • We won't be having dinner at home tonight.
  • At 4 pm, I'll be riding the train back home.
Note that it's usually used with future time expressions, such as: next time, next year, at this time tomorrow, at 5 pm tomorrow, in the future...Probably most frequently this tense is used with by+time expression, e.g. by 7 o'clock tonight.

TASK 1:

1. Now read through exercise 2, sentences 1–6 and complete the exercise. Use contractions wherever possible. Be careful about state/activity verbs. Send me the answers.
2. Complete the text in exercise 3, use either future simple or continuous. Send me the answers.

Extra activities because practice makes perfect :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As our first vocabulary content in unit 10, let's look at words and expressions targeting money and value. Before you begin with the first exercise, read the following story, as it can help you match them with the definitions correctly:

Last week, my friend phoned and said there was a sale on at the shopping centre. She said there were lots of bargains and things on offer. I went to the sale and got $20 off a jumper. It was very good value for money. However, when I got home I found a hole in it, so I had to take it back and ask for a refund. On the way back home, I found a wallet on the street. It had an address in it, so I took it round and gave it to the owner, who was an artist. He was so pleased that he gave me a reward - a painting he had done of the Taj Mahal. I looked him up on the Internet when I got home and discovered that the painting is quite valuable - it's worth about 1000$!

TASK 2:

3. Match the words with the definitions. Send me the answers.
4. Complete the sentences with the words from exercise 1. Send me the complete sentences.
5. Answer the questions in exercise 3 about yourself and send me the answers.

TASK 3 (extra effort for extra grade <3 )
НЕ Е ЗАДОЛЖИТЕЛНА, но ако се сработи кажува многу ;)

5. Fill in the gaps with the correct verb, in the correct form. Find the unknown vocab by yourself!

(not) earn, inherit, borrow, lend, steal, find, invest,
waste, pay (back), owe, withdraw

1. When I was younger, I _______________ some money in Nokia. It was a really good idea because the company has been very successful, and I have made a lot of money.
2. I was very sad when my grandfather died, but I used the money I _____________ from him to study, and I think he would be very happy that I am a teacher now.
3. Claire works as a secretary, but she _______________ much money, so her mum often has to ______________ her some.
4.  A couple of years ago I ____________ £20 outside the pub. I ___________ it all on things I didn’t need.
5. When I was a student I had to _______________ lots of money from the bank. I __________ all the money back last year, so now I don’t _______ the bank anything.
6. You should be careful when you ______________ money from a cashpoint machine because somebody might be behind you waiting to ___________ it from you.

6. Answer the questions about yourself.

1. Have you/your family ever bought anything as a good value for money? What happened?
2. Have you ever found any money by accident? Did you keep it? Why/why not?
3. Have you ever been given a reward? What for? What happened?

I'll be expecting your answers till Tuesday, 23:59 pm. Sending lots of love to you all 💕

And here's a song using the future continuous tense....enjoy!

II year - THINK 2, Unit 10, p.94

Hello everyone!

Today we begin with the first grammar content in unit 10. We are going to discuss the past perfect tense, its formation and use, along with some exercises from the web, but also some interesting personal examples. Look at the two sentences in exercise 1, both in past perfect, both in connection to the text about Phoebe Snetsinger. When you answer the two questions referring to them, you should get the answers:

1. Her returning from the trip.
2. Spotting the birds

Now you can get the rule rectangle filled in:

Form the past perfect with had (or 'd) + the PAST PARTICIPLE of the verb.
(eg. I had seen the movie....)

In the rectangle you also have the definition of the use of this tense. The past perfect describes a past event that had happened before another past event. That's why in Macedonian we usually refer to it as предминато време.

We usually use the past perfect to make it clear which action happened first. Maybe we are already talking about something in the past and we want to mention something else that is further back in time. This is often used to explain or give a reason for something in the past:
  • I'd eaten dinner so I wasn't hungry.
  • It had snowed in the night, so the bus didn't arrive.
TASK 1:

1. Now read through exercise 2, sentences 1–8 and complete the exercise. Think carefully about the past participle you need to use and if you need a regular or an irregular past participle. Send me the answers.
2. Complete the sentences in exercise 3 about yourself, using the past perfect. Send me the answers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As our first vocabulary content in unit 10, let's look at time linkers. We use time linkers when we want to join two sentences. They are rather useful in storytelling, as they indicate time and help us understand exactly when things happened, happen, or will happen. They also help us keep our speech organized as we're trying to communicate. Look at the following sentences:

1. I started studying as soon as I got home.
2. When I got hungry, I had a sandwich.
3. I studied for hours. Then I had a coffee.
4. I studied until 2.30 in the morning.
5. I fell asleep while I was studying.

The meaning of the linkers can be analyzed as:
As soon as = at exactly the same moment
When = at the same moment or soon after
Then = after that
Until = up to a point in time
While = at the same time as

TASK 2:

3. Read through the story in exercise 1 and complete it with the words in the list. Send me the answers.
4. Match the halves of the sentences in exercise 2. Send me the complete sentences.

TASK 3 (extra effort for extra grade <3 )
НЕ Е ЗАДОЛЖИТЕЛНА, но ако се сработи кажува многу ;)

5. Listen to the story, and notice the different verb forms being used. We call them narrative tenses - to sequence stories about the past. Past perfect is one of them. (The others are past simple and continuous).

Here’s the transcript to the mystery story, but with some of the verbs ‘gapped’. Try to put them in the correct tense. Listen to answer and to check.

Last night I _________________ (walk) home next to the river Thames, when something strange _________________ (happen) to me. It was late at night and I _________________ (have) a long and difficult day at work. There was a large full moon in the sky and everything was quiet. I was tired and lonely and I _________________ (just have) a few pints of beer in my local pub, so I decided to stop by the riverside and look at the moon for a while.
I _________________ (sit) on some steps very close to the water’s edge and looked up at the big yellow moon and wondered if it really was made of cheese. I felt very tired so I _________________ (close) my eyes and after a few minutes, I _________________ (fall) asleep. When I woke up, the moon _________________ (move) behind a cloud and it was very dark and cold. The wind _________________ (blow) and an owl _________________ (hoot) in a tree above me. I rubbed my eyes and started to get up, when suddenly I _________________ (hear) a splash. I _________________ (look) down at the water and saw something. Something terrible and frightening, and unlike anything I’d ever seen before. Something _________________ (come) out of the water and _________________ (move) towards me. Something green and strange and ugly. It was a long green arm and it _________________ (stretch) out from the water to grab my leg. I was so scared that I couldn’t move. I _________________ (never be) so scared in my whole life. The cold green hand _________________ (move) closer and closer when suddenly there was a blue flash and a strange noise from behind me. Someone _________________ (jump) onto the stairs next to me. He _________________ (wear) strange clothes and he had a crazy look in his eyes. He shouted “Get Back!” and _________________ (point) something at the monster in the water. There was a bright flash and the monster hissed and disappeared.

I looked up at the man. He looked strange, but kind. “Don’t fall asleep by the river when there’s a full moon”, he said “The Moon Goblins will get you.” I _________________ (never hear) of moon goblins before. I didn’t know what to do. “Who… who are you?” I asked him. “You can call me… The Doctor.” He said. I _________________ (try) to think of something else to say when he turned around and said, “Watch the stars at night, and be careful of the full moon”. I was trying to understand what he meant, when there was another blue flash and I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, he _________________ (go).

I couldn’t believe what _________________(happen). What on earth were Moon Goblins, and who was the mysterious Doctor? And why had he saved me? I was determined to find the answers to these strange questions. I stood up, looked at the moon and quickly walked home.

Hello everyone!
Today we begin with the last three units in the book, which should be completed by the end of the school year. Unit 10 has the title Keep healthy, so we are going to discuss about our health (not referring to this specific situation only, but in general), about different lifestyles and the (dis)advantages from them.
The photo above shows page 92 of your book THINK 2, and there are 4 photos on it, each depicting a certain free-time activity.

TASK 1:
1. Explain the activities shown, which means give a short description of what is being done, by whom, do you maybe have it as a free-time activity or know someone who does it.
2. Add three more free-time activities, explaining them in as much detail as possible.
3. How might the various free-time activities be good for someone's health?

Page 93 presents a text, 8000 Birds to See Before You Die. There are two photos presented along with the text. One of them has a description, the Rufous-necked Wood Rail. The other one is a cover of a book, Birding on Borrowing Time by Phoebe Snetsinger.

TASK 2:
4.Look up the Rufous-necked Wood Rail and send me back at least two interesting facts about it.
5. Find the correct pronunciation of the last name Snetsinger and send it back, either as an audio file or with the help of IPA (international phonetic alphabet) :)

Read the text carefully, use the Internet for any unknown words. If the meaning of some words or phrases still remains unclear, feel free to contact me! After reading the text, look at the THINK VALUES section on page 93.

TASK 3:
6. Tick the sentences from the Think values section and in relation to the text on page 93, what you think you can learn from this story. Send me the answer(s) and explain which one is the most important for you and why?

I'll be expecting your answers till Sunday. My mail and social profiles are in the Welcome post on this blog. Sending lots of love to you all. Stay healthy!
